Bible Study Tool
I just wanted to share with you a tool that I keep with my Bible study material. If I need to abbreviate a particular book (while writing study notes or posting a verse on Facebook or this blog) and have a brain flubber (which happens more often than I would like) I pull out this handy dandy list as a reference.
Now, while we are on this subject, I would like to encourage you (if you don't already) to pick a spot in your home to read and study your Bible and keep everything you need in that same location so that you don't lose your train of thought while having to stop and search for a highlighter, pen, Bible commentary, etc. I know very well how satan tries to distract me when I am trying to fill my mind and heart with God's precious Word and when I give him an inch he WILL take a mile. As much as he likes to trip me up I know that I am not his only target.
Anyway, I like simplicity, so to make a useful, consistent abbreviation, which is easy to remember, each book is represented by its first 3 Alphanumerics (with no spaces). The only exceptions are:
Philemon that conflicts with Philippians; Philemon is represented as Phm and Philippians as Phi Judges conflicts with Jude; Judges is represented as Jdg and Jude as Jud.
Beside
those, the books can be written fully or in parts (no less than 3
letters), as long as the alphanumeric sequence is correct. (Empty space
is not used for abbreviations).
An abbreviation can be written as: Jer or JER, 1CO or 1Co (no full stop following).
